12th-Ranked Jeffs Win Third Straight, Improve to 2-0 in Conference Play, With 86-56 Win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, ME - The Amherst College men's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, steamrolling Bowdoin College 86-56 on Saturday in Brunswick. The Lord Jeffs, ranked 12th in the latest national poll, improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Bowdoin drops their sixth straight contest and falls to 5-8 (0-2 NESCAC). 

The Jeffs took an early 11-4 lead thanks to a trio of three-pointers by John Donovan in the first four minutes of the game. Amherst hit on 62% of their attempts in the first half and would enter intermission with their largest advantage of the period, 22 points, at 46-24. 

The Polar Bears attempted to make a run out of the gate in the second frame, jumping on a 5-0 run to start the half. But Bowdoin could get no closer than 16 points as the Jeffs cruised to the win. 

Steve Zieja led all scorers with 19 points, while John Donovan (12), John Bedford (11) and Andrew Schiel (10) also reached double-digits. Danny Ginn led Bowdoin with 16 points, while Kyle Petrie (10) and Braden Clement (10 points, 11 boards) also reached double figures. 

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against visiting Lasell College.
