HARTFORD, CT - The 12th-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team remained in first place in the NESCAC with a hard-fought 78-73 win at Trinity College on Saturday. Senior forward Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) led the way with a team-high 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds as the Jeffs improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Trinity fell to 13-7 (4-3 NESCAC) with the loss.

Amherst took a 5-4 lead on a layup by senior center Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) 3:19 into the opening period and managed to keep Trinity in its rearview mirror the rest of the way. Fitzsimons, who missed the last two games with a sore hamstring, started the game, played 14 minutes and finished with six points on 3-for-3 shooting.

Junior guard John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) and sophomore forward Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA) joined Zieja in double figures with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while senior point guard Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH) dished out a team-high six assists.

Ryan Uszenski and Tyler Rhoten paced Trinity with 20 points each.

Amherst has just three games remaining on its regular season slate, all at home, beginning with Tuesday's non-league matchup against visiting Brandeis University. The Jeffs then wrap up conference play with Friday and Saturday home games against Conn. College and Wesleyan University.
