AMHERST, Mass. -- For the second straight week, a member of the Amherst College football defensive corps has been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Player of the Week.
Senior defensive back Avery Saffold received the award, announced by the conference office on Sunday morning, after helping Amherst to a 26-16 win at Tufts yesterday afternoon.
A pair of interceptions by Safford aided the Mammoths in a major way. He picked off a pass in the end zone with just 40 seconds remaining in the first half that allowed the Purple and White to go into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
His interception in the middle of the field with just four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter deflated the Jumbos' hopes of a comeback.
The native of Chicago, Ill. also had four tackles in the victory, giving him 11 for the season. He has picked off three passes, and also has a blocked kick and a pass breakup on his 2019 resume.
Saffold and the Mammoths return home for their next two games, beginning on October 5th when the 3-0 Mammoths host Middlebury (3-0) at Pratt Field at 2:00 PM.
