Callahan's Stellar Senior Day Earns NESCAC Recognition

AMHERST, Mass. -- John Callahan '19 had a Senior Day to remember this past Saturday, and his performance has gotten him named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Callahan had two huge defensive plays in a 19-13 win over Tufts. He is the third Mammoth to win a NESCAC Player of the Week award, and the second in as many games.

His first-half interception led to an Amherst field goal to push the Mammoths' lead to 10-0.

With Amherst leading 10-6, Callahan swiped a ball from a Tufts' receivers hand for a fumble recovery and returned the ball 65 yards to the Tufts 2-yard line, setting up a rushing score to increase Amherst's lead to 16-6. 

The senior linebacker had five tackles in the victory and he leads the team with 44 total tackles. He has one sack and 55. tackles for a loss on the season.

The Mammoths are now 7-0 on the year, and will play at Trinity College next Saturday with a chance to clinch the NESCAC championship with a victory.

This is the fifth time in the last sixth seasons that the Mammoths have compiled seven or more wins. 

Biafra Okoronkwo '20 was the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week last week, while Andrew Yamin '19 earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades on October 7th.
