AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College sophomore outfielder Joseph Palmo has been selected to the 2019 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference team, announced on Wednesday morning by the conference office.
Palmo, making his first All-Conference selection, was voted by the league's coaches to the Second Team.
The sophomore right fielder was a run-scoring machine for the Mammoths, crossing the plate 37 times to rank fifth in the NESCAC.
He scored multiple runs in ten different games this year, including back-to-back four-run games in wins over Anderson and Dean.
A .339 hitter this year, Palmo also led the Mammoths with a .460 on-base percentage, good for eighth in the NESCAC, and a .536 slugging percentage, which ranked seventh in the league. He tied with teammate Steven Burke '21 for the team-lead with 11 doubles and 38 base-hits, and drove in 27 runs, behind only senior Chase Henley for tops on the club.
In the final week of the regular season, Palmo had back to back games in which he hit three-run home runs. He first connected with two men on in a 6-4 win over Clark, then hit a dramatic game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth with the Mammoths down 3-0 against Middlebury.
Palmo showed off his speed both on the base-paths, where he co-led the team with seven stolen bases, and in the outfield, where he tracked down plenty of fly balls. Palmo made 70 putouts and had five outfield assists, along with a fielding percentage of .962.
The native of Austin, Texas started the season with a flourish, recording hits in six straight games to open the Spring Break trip to Florida. He hit a dramatic two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth against Wisconsin Stevens-Point to extend an eventual 6-5 walk-off victory for the Mammoths. He scored eleven runs and collected nine RBIs on his way to being named NESCAC Player of the Week on March 18th.
