HADLEY, Mass. – After helping Amherst College win the 2018 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), seniors Max Steinhorn and Sam Schneider have been named the NESCAC Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Amherst won the program's fourth conference title on Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Tufts, following a 9-2 victory over the Jumbos on Saturday and a 3-2, 12 inning win over Bates Friday evening.
Schneider sparked Amherst's run to the NESCAC championship with a brilliant outing in their opening win over Bates. The Senior lefty struck out ten Bobcats over seven and two-thirds innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run.
Schneider recorded seven straight outs, four of them by strikeout, after allowing a single run in the fourth inning to the Bobcats, allowing the Mammoths to tie the game en route to their 12-inning dramatic victory.
Steinhorn was part of two huge plays that led to Amherst's fourth conference championship in program history. His single to right field in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Will Murphy and let Amherst walk off with a 3-2 come from behind victory over Bates in the opening round game.
In the bottom of the seventh on Sunday, with Amherst trailing Tufts 2-1, Steinhorn used his speed and heads-up baseball acumen to score from second base on a fielder's choice in the infield. As the Jumbos tried to turn two to end the inning, Steinhorn flashed around third and dove into home to beat the throw and give Amherst the lead with the championship-winning run.
Amherst (24-12) will begin play at the 2018 Auburn, N.Y. Regional on Thursday against the University of Southern Maine.
