AMHERST, Mass. – Senior second baseman Max Steinhorn has been selected to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team, voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June.
A history major with a 3.90 grade point average, Steinhorn is also leading the Mammoths with 33 runs scored and is in the top five in the NESCAC with a .376 batting average.
Steinhorn has played in all 33 games for the Mammoths, who head into this weekend's baseball tournament with a 21-12 record and as the top seed in the West Division. He is fourth in the conference with 14 stolen bases, and has driven in 18 runs while collecting six doubles and one homer.
Owner of a .329 four-year batting average, Steinhorn is finishing an Amherst career in which he has scored 108 runs, collected 155 hits and stolen 49 bases.
Academic pursuits for Steinhorn have included his Senior Honor's Thesis, entitled Tapping Into a Political Force: George Wallace, the North, and the 1968 Election.
He also spent a semester at King's College in London, has interned with Crosscut Strategies in Washington, D.C., and has participated in both Amherst LEADs and the Amherst LEADs Captains Symposium.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with Steinhorn placing on District 1, which comprises much of New England.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.
The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic AllAmerica® teams.
