Baseball Falls to Hamilton, 8-2

HARTFORD, Conn. – Facing off against Hamilton at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium on the campus of Trinity College, the Amherst College baseball team were unable to overcome an early deficit as the Mammoths fell, 8-2.

With the setback, Amherst falls to 19-11 overall and to 6-3 in league play, while Hamilton improves to 17-17 on the season (4-8 NESCAC West). Amherst returns to the field on Saturday, May 5 when they travel to Middlebury for game one of a regular season ending three-game series.

The first three Continentals of the contest reached base to set up a two run opening inning by the visitors, however the Mammoths struck back in in the bottom half, with Ariel Kenney '18 sending a sac fly to center to get Amherst on the board.

Extending their lead to 3-1 in the top of the third, Matt Cappelletti drove a two out triple to left field to score Matt Zaffino before seven Hamilton batters saw the plate in a three run fourth inning to set the score at 6-1.

Quiet through the next three innings, the two sides matched runs in the eighth before the Continentals recorded one final insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure the 8-2 win.

Tossing 5.0 innings in the start for the Continentals, Brian Lawson (3-3) earned the win, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five.

Seven Mammoths saw time on the mound in the contest, with Davis Brown '19 (5-3) giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out two in the loss.
