NORTON, Mass. – Holding the Lyons scoreless in the final five innings while adding 13 runs to the board, the Amherst College baseball team powered past Wheaton College, 16-2 Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium in non-conference action.
With the win, Amherst's overall ledger improves to 17-8, while Wheaton falls to 19-13 on the year. Amherst returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 26 when they travel to Springfield for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
Quickly countering, Matt Cook took advantage of a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning before a Lyon error and a Max Steinhorn '18 hard hit ball to second plated two runs to get the Mammoth out in front, 3-1.
Wheaton cut their deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth to keep things interesting down the stretch, however Amherst began to break the game open in the fifth, adding three runs to the board behind an error and a two out double by Kevin Schroeder '21.
Holding the home team scoreless in their final five at bats, the Mammoths capped off the day with a dominant eight hit, nine run eighth inning and one final dagger in the top of the ninth.
Tasked with the start, Zach Brown '18 (2-0) earned the win for Amherst, allowing two hits and one run while striking out five in 2.0 innings on the mound. Seeing action in relief, Stephen Burke '21 gave up just one run on one hit in four innings, while Zach Horwitz '20 struck out three in the final three innings.
