Six Hurlers Combine for Three-Hit Shutout of Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Amherst College pitchers allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters to help the Mammoths collect their first shutout of the year, a 9-0 win over Dean College in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon.

Amherst (13-7) will play another non-conference road game tomorrow when they visit Roger Williams at 4:00 pm.

Starter Zach Brown '18 threw the first three innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.

Jordan Aucoin '21 saw his first action of the year in a scoreless fourth inning, and Zach Horwitz '20 struck out all three batters he faced in a perfect fifth.

Wilson Taylor '18 allowed one hit over an inning pitched before David Brinkley '19 and Ryan Sholtis '21 combined for a perfect final two innings of work.

On the offensive side of things, Severino Simeone '21 had three hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs. Shortstop Harry Roberson '18 was one of four Mammoths with two hits on the day, and he scored twice.

The Mammoths put up a run in the third on a double by junior Nick Nardone, scoring senior second baseman Max Steinhorn. They added two more in the fourth, including a Steinhorn RBI single to center field, and another pair in the fifth, when Simeone got going.

With two outs, Roberson singled to center field and then scored on a double to left by Rob Casey III that chased Dean starter Colton Fitzsimmons from the game.

Simeone then doubled to right field to score Casey and make it 5-0 Mammoths.

The sophomore catcher plated Roberson again in the top of the seventh and Amherst capped their 15-hit explosion with three runs in the eighth, including a Stephen Burke sacrifice fly '21 to plate Nardone after Ariel Kenney '18 launched his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field.
