AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College baseball team capped their home opening weekend with a sweep of two games against Fitchburg State University to get their record back above .500 at 6-5.
The Mammoths never trailed in either game, winning a seven-inning affair 8-2 and then emerging as 9-1 victors in a full nine-inning nightcap.
The next scheduled game for Amherst is on Tuesday, March 27th when they welcome Brandeis University for a 3:30 PM first pitch.
Game 1: Amherst 8, Fitchburg State 2
Amherst went ahead 3-0 after three innings and then broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning, with two-run hits delivered by both Topher Brown '20 and Will Murphy '20 in that frame.
Davis Brown '19 allowed just two hits and one earned run over five and a third innings while striking out eight Fitchburg State batters. Mike Dow '19 finished the game for the Mammoths pitching 1 and ⅔ innings. He struck out four Falcons and only allowed one run. The Mammoths recorded 12 strikeouts as a pitching staff while the lineup fanned just five times.
Harry Roberson '18 scored twice and had two RBIs of his own in the first leg of the doubleheader. Fitchburg first baseman Brennan Cuddahy had the only RBI in the game for the Falcons on a double in the sixth inning.
Amherst led Fitchburg State 3-0 heading into the sixth, before the Falcons would make it a 3-1 game going into the bottom half of the sixth. The Mammoths responded with a five run sixth to make it 8-1 heading into the final inning.
A botched play in left field by the Falcons allowed Amherst to score their eighth and final run of the game. Fitchburg State scored another run in the 7th before Dow and the Amherst defense shut the door.
Game 2: Amherst 9, Fitchburg State 1
Sam Schneider '18 struck out 11 batters and allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and the Mammoths outhit their opponents 11-3, busting the game open with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Schneider took a no-hitter into the sixth and finished the game throwing 59 of his 89 pitches for strikes.
Murphy had two hits and scored a pair of runs and Amherst opened a 1-0 game up with three runs on three hits and a Fitchburg error in the fifth inning.
Murphy singled home Seve Simeone '20 and Joe Palmo '21 singled and scored on a bunt by Kai Terada-Herzer '21. With two outs, Murphy scored on a wild pitch after the Mammoths drew back to back walks.
Amherst took advantage of three hit batsmen and three hits to blow open the game with five more runs in the eighth inning. Steinhorn delivered the biggest blow with a two-run single to center field. Simeone had sacrifice fly, Palmo drove in a run with a single to right center and Nick Nardone '19 crossed the plate when Ryan Hardin '18 was hit by a pitch.
Zach Horwitz '20 threw three innings of relief, allowing just one run on two hits and collecting a pair of strikeouts for Amherst.
Joshua Macomber scored the only run of the game for the Falcons (5-6-1), leading off the eighth inning with a double down the left field line and scoring on a double play groundout.
