Baseball Edged by Nichols, 2-1, in Florida

NORTH CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Despite strong pitching performances, Amherst College was held to just three hits and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nichols College in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon during spring break.

Andrew Ferrero '19 threw six and a third innings and gave up just two earned runs on seven hits and no walks. Mike Dow '19 and Sam Schneider '18 went an inning and two thirds in scoreless relief, but Amherst could only manage two hits and an unearned run against Bison starter Vincent Amato, who threw seven innings and struck out four.

Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, which started with a Nick Nardone '19 double, and saw Nardone score on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Sam Ellinwood '18.

Nichols tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Kyle Bouchard, and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ryan Nesbit doubled down the right field line, advancing Chris Anderson to third after he singled with one out. Anderson crossed the plate on a groundout to the pitcher by Joe Assenza.

Nardone's double was the only extra base hit of the day for Amherst, who also got singles from Joe Palmo '21 and Zach Horwitz '20.

Nick Roy, who scored on Bouchard's singe, had three hits in the game, while Anderson was 2-3 for Nichols (3-5).

The Mammoths see their record even up at 2-2 on the season, and will be back in Fort Myers on Thursday for a 3:00 pm game against Haverford.
