Jeffs Split Doubleheader Against Endicott

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Amherst College baseball team defeated Endicott College 13-5 in game one, but fell in game two of Friday's twinbill, 12-4.

The Jeffs are now 5-4 overall on the year and will return to action tomorrow to face William Paterson University at 9 a.m. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Purple & White. The Gulls are now 3-5 this season.

GAME 1: AMHERST 13, ENDICOTT 5 (7 innings)
The Jeffs continued to hit the ball well against the Gulls in game one and opened the game with a 6-1 lead after three innings. Led by Conner Gunn '16, Amherst totaled 15 hits in the game as the junior went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with two RBI. Yanni Thanopoulos '17 went 3-for-4 with a triple, a RBI and four runs scored, while Eric West '15 and Andrew Vandini '16 each recorded two hits. Vandini and Tyler Jacobs '15 both drove in two runs, while West added a RBI as well.

Jackson Volle '17 pitched a complete game. The sophomore surrendered five runs on eight hits and struck out four batters.

After a scoreless first, the Jeffs registered three runs in the top of the second and added three more in the third. The Gulls cut the deficit to five after a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, and scored twice more in the fourth to trail 6-3. 

The three-run margin remained intact after both teams scored two runs in the fifth, but Amherst pulled away in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Gunn and Thanopoulos each recorded RBI singles in the sixth, and Vandini added a two-RBI single in the seventh. Max Steinhorn '18 also scored in the inning after a fielding error by Endicott.

GAME 2: ENDICOTT 12, AMHERST 4 (7 innings)
Endicott scored seven runs in the top of the second, four in the fourth and one in the sixth en route to the victory. The Jeffs cut the deficit to three with a four-run bottom of the third but it wasn't enough.

Mike Odenwaelder '16 and Thanopoulos led Amherst with two hits each. Odenwaelder finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and walked once, while Thanopoulos went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Gunn hit a two-run homer, as Jacobs and Sam Ellinwood '18 each added a hit.

Riley Streit '16 started on the mound for the Purple & White and pitched 5.2 innings. He struck out three and allowed 12 runs, but only four were earned. JR Anderson '18 tossed in relief and struck out one batter, and allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings.
