WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – For the second time in four days, the Amherst College baseball team totaled 20 runs as it cruised to a commanding 20-7 win over St. Norbert College Thursday night.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 4-3 overall this season and have six games remaining in their spring break trip. Following the loss, the Green Knights drop to 6-2 on the year.
The Purple & White totaled 18 hits in the game and were led by Andrew Vandini '16 who went 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Twelve different Jeffs recorded a hit as Tyler Jacobs '15, Yanni Thanopoulos '16, Max Steinhorn '18 and Sam Ellinwood '18 all registered two hits. Thanopoulos drove in five runs with a grand slam and scored twice, while Jacobs, Ellinwood and Anthony Spina '17 tallied two RBI each. Ellinwood also hit a home run in the game.
Five different Jeffs pitched for the Purple & White as Sam Schneider '18 earned the starting nod and picked up the win. He went four innings without allowing a run and struck out five.
Amherst opened the game strong and jumped out to a decisive 9-0 lead after two innings. After a four-run top of the first, the Jeffs tacked on five more in the second. With the bases loaded, Thanopoulos homered over the center field fence for the grand slam. They added another run three batters later as Jacobs drove in Gunn on a fielder's choice.
After two scoreless innings, the Jeffs poured on another five-run inning in the top of the fifth. Ellinwood hit a home run in the inning to bring in Roberson as Amherst took a commanding 14-0 lead. However, The Green Knights retaliated in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, before adding another in the sixth to cut the deficit to nine.
In the top of the seventh, the Jeffs tacked on a run before St. Norbert scored two in the bottom half of the inning. However, Amherst put together another five-run inning in the top of the eighth to pull away with decisive 13-run win.
The Jeffs return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader against Endicott beginning at 2 p.m.
