WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Mike Odenwaelder '16 recorded three hits to lead the Amherst College baseball team to an 8-3 win over Grinnell College Thursday.
The Jeffs improve to 5-1 overall on the season and drop the Pioneers to 4-3.
Odenwaelder went 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored. Anthony Spina '17 was 2-for-4 with a RBI and Taiki Kasuga '14 went 2-for-3 with a RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Conner Gunn '16 added a RBI double and Eric West '15 went 1-for-2 with a RBI, run scored and walked once.
Dylan Driscoll '14 started for Amherst and threw seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven, walked one and surrendered just five hits.
After two scoreless innings, the Jeffs got on the board in the bottom of the third on a double to left field from Kasuga to drive in Andrew Vandini '16.
The following inning, Amherst tacked on three more scores to increase their lead to 4-0. West scored on a Grinnell error and Spina drove in Odenwaelder with a ground ball single through the left side. With two outs, Vandini hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jonathan Ramirez '16.
Amherst added four more runs through the next three innings as they held a commanding 8-0 lead entering the top of the ninth. The Pioneers rallied and scored three runs in the inning but the deficit was too large to overcome.
The Jeffs return to the field tomorrow, Mar. 21 for a doubleheader against UMass-Dartmouth. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
