Samela Named NESCAC Player of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Mike Samela '12 has been named NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week after batting .600 and slugging .800 during three victories for the Lord Jeffs.

Samela led Amherst in hits (6-for-10) and runs scored (7) during the week, also recording six RBIs and two doubles without committing an error in the field. He began with a 3-for-3 performance during a 15-3 win over Castleton State, scoring four runs and driving in two others with a double and a walk.

The senior captain then went 1-for-4 and scored a run during a 5-1 win over Bates, but it was his defense that stood out in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. With the Jeffs holding a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, the Bobcats threatened with runners on second and third and only one out. The next batter sent a fly ball to Samela, who made the catch and fired a bullet from right field to gun down the potential tying run at the plate.

Samela then helped Amherst put together its highest-scoring game in more than two years by going 2-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a double during a 20-5 win over the Bobcats. Since having a 20-game hitting streak snapped earlier in the season, Samela has gotten back on track to hit safely in each of his past five outings.

The reigning NESCAC Player of the Year is batting .375 with a team-best 23 RBIs, and he has recorded a perfect fielding percentage in 97 chances as an outfielder and catcher. He is hitting .429 at home, where the Jeffs have posted a 9-0 record this season.

The Jeffs will look to continue their seven-game win streak tomorrow at Brandeis (6-26). Samela is a .500 lifetime hitter against the Judges, going 1-for-3 as a sophomore and 3-for-5 a year ago.
