Amherst Sweeps Roger Williams to Improve to 3-0

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Amherst College baseball team defeated Roger Williams University by scores of 18-5 and 9-3 Sunday afternoon in day two of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Lord Jeffs are 3-0 for the first time since the 2003 squad won its first four games of the season, while the Hawks move to 1-2.

Senior co-captain Will Lawton (Newton, MA) was a combined 7-for-7 with two RBIs and five runs scored, while juniors Ryan Healy (Westport, CT) and Max McKenna (Lexington, MA) each put in a solid pitching performance to lead the Lord Jeffs to the pair of seven-inning victories.

Healy (1-0) picked up the win in the first game by allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work, striking out nine Hawks and walking only one. Jeff Keenan '11 (West Hartford, CT) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits to go along with a strikeout.

Amherst picked up 18 hits and committed only one error in the first game, with 17 of its runs coming in the first four innings. First-year Nolan Stewart (New Canaan, CT) was a double shy of the cycle, as he went 4-for-5 with a triple and home run with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore John Wagner (Evanston, IL) added three hits with a homer of his own, scoring four runs while driving in a pair. Lawton was 3-for-3 before being replaced by first-year Dan Pillitteri (Ramsey, NJ), who picked up two hits and scored a run.

The Lord Jeffs piled on 11 more hits in the nightcap and committed two errors in the field, while the Hawks scored three runs on seven hits. McKenna (1-0) pitched the first six innings and allowed three earned runs on only six hits, striking out one and stranding five runners. Pat Harris '11 (Rochester, NY) closed out the game by surrendering only one hit and leaving that runner stranded on first base.

Lawton went 4-for-4 in the second game, while sophomores Thomas Wheeler (Minnetonka, MN) and Kevin Heller (Brooklyn, NY) each went 2-for-4. Wheeler drove in three runs and scored another, with Heller hitting a triple and picking up an RBI.
