AMHERST, MA – On Sunday, Oct. 7, the Lord Jeff baseball team participated in the annual Friends of Jaclyn 5k Race/Walk at Amherst College. The players joined more than 400 participants from Amherst and other New England colleges and universities to raise more than $6,500 for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. In addition to participating, several baseball players helped set up and administer the event.
Founded in 2004 by the family of Jaclyn Murphy, who was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor when she was nine years old, the Foundation works to improve the quality of life for victims of pediatric cancer and their families. One of the Foundation's most successful initiatives has been an adoption program through which college sports teams provide support and friendship for young cancer victims.
Several Amherst College athletic teams, including the men's soccer and women's field hockey team, have adopted children through the Foundation. The 2009 race/walk at Amherst marks the second consecutive year that the College has hosted this charity event.
