AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore right fielder Kevin Heller (Brooklyn, NY) has been named the NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week for the second time in his career, the conference announced today. Heller led the Lord Jeffs to a pivotal three-game sweep of Hamilton College, which kept Amherst atop the NESCAC West standings.
In addition to not committing an error in the field or striking out at the plate, Heller batted .600 (9-for-15) with a 1.200 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage. Heller scored six runs and drove in five others, adding five extra-base hits and a walk.
Amherst scored 46 runs on 48 hits against the Continentals, with Heller leading the charge in Friday's dominant 24-3 win. In that game, he hit safely in each of his first five at-bats en route to a 6-for-7 performance that included two doubles and two triples. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Heller belted a solo homer in the second inning to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead. In the nightcap, he went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
The Continentals can rest easy knowing they won't have to face Heller for the remainder of the regular season. In six career games against Hamilton, the Amherst slugger is batting .571 (16-for-28) with a 1.071 slugging percentage, recording at least two hits in five of those games. Against the NESCAC West this season, Heller is batting .480 (12-for-25).
The 2009 NESCAC Rookie of the Year and an All-Conference First Team selection, Heller earned his first Player of the Week honor after batting .622 during the team's Spring Break trip as a first-year.
The Lord Jeffs (10-7/4-2 NESCAC West) begin the week tied with Wesleyan University atop the conference's West division. They will return to action Tuesday, Apr. 6, when they travel to Keene State College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game. Live video and statistics will be available.
