AMHERST, MA – The NESCAC announced its first Pitcher of the Week selection of 2008, with Amherst College first-year Jeff Keenan (West Hartford, CT) earning the honor. In two starts for the Lord Jeffs last week, Keenan posted a 1-0 record with a 0.90 ERA over 10.0 innings pitched. He allowed one earned run on six hits, holding opponents to a .162 batting average and one extra-base hit, while striking out nine and walking four.
Keenan made his collegiate debut on Monday, Mar. 17 in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Plymouth State. The rookie right-hander pitched the first six innings of the game, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters to pick up the win.
The Jeffs took on Fredonia State in their final game of the team's Spring Break trip to Fort Myers and handed the ball to Keenan. In four innings of work, Keenan picked up four strikeouts and allowed just two hits and a pair of walks. Despite his solid performance, four innings weren't enough to get credit for the win, as he remained at 1-0 for the year.
In addition to posting solid numbers last week, Keenan displayed maturity by keeping his cool on the mound in tough situations. Notably, when Fredonia State loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the fourth, Keenan got the next batter to fly out to center field and then picked up a big strikeout to close out the frame unharmed, preserving the Jeffs' 2-0 lead.
Amherst went 6-4 during its southern swing and will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 26 for the 2008 home opener against Westfield State College at 3:30 p.m.
