FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College baseball team trailed Babson College 1-0 through five innings, but the Lord Jeffs gave up five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to an 11-4 loss to kick off the 2008 season. Amherst (0-1) continues its Spring Break trip Sunday in Fort Myers with a 7 p.m. game against Nichols College, while Babson improves to 2-1 on the early season.
Senior right hander Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) got the start for Amherst and performed well in his 2008 debut, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits through five innings of work. Edgar picked up four strikeouts before handing the ball over to junior southpaw Ryan Platzbecker (West Lake, OH) at the start of the sixth inning with the Jeffs trailing the Beavers, 1-0. Unearned runs struck again, however, as the Beavers chalked up another five runs—none of which were earned—in the bottom of the sixth.
Babson ran away with the game from there and took an 11-0 lead into the top of the ninth. The Amherst bats finally came to life when first-year Jose Espinosa (Ridgefield, CT) led off with a double and eventually came around to score the Jeffs' first run of the season. Senior co-captain Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) and juniors Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) and Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) each had RBI-singles in the final frame, but it was too little, too late for Amherst.
The Jeffs had just six hits on the day, as their lack of run-production and shaky defensive effort made Edgar (0-1) the tough-luck loser.
