FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College baseball team rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to knot the score 16-16, only to surrender a game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th in a wild 17-16 loss to Babson College on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) capped Amherst's game-tying flurry with his first homerun of the season, a three-run shot with two strikes and two outs in the inning. Sophomore Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) drove in six runs and paced the offense with a pair of solo homers en route to a 6-for-7 afternoon.
Senior hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) drew the start for Amherst and pitched into the fourth inning before giving way to sophomores Mike Hinckley (Carlsbad, CA) and Ben Goldfarb (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and junior Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY). Edgar took the loss to fall to 0-2.
Amherst (2-4) returns to action Friday at noon with a doubleheader against Plymouth State, also in Fort Myers.
