AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team split the Saturday doubleheader with NESCAC West rival Williams College. After taking the opener 5-3, Amherst dropped the second game 7-3. With the split, Amherst moves to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference play while the Ephs move to 14-6 (4-2 NESCAC West). The games were moved to Amherst because of unplayable field conditions at Williams this weekend.

Game one saw the Jeffs, playing as the visiting team at Memorial Field, send junior hurler Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) against Williams senior Cory Catelli (Westport, MA). The Jeffs jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) who was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day bunt a two out single followed by a Will Lawton (Newton, MA) single that put runners at the corners before A Catelli balk allowed Banner to score.

Williams countered in the bottom of the second when designated hitter Taylor Mickell (Williston, VT) pulled a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole.

A three-run third inning surge put the Jeffs up for good when rookie shortstop Andrew Thal (McLean, VA) and second baseman Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) each scored off Williams fielding blunders. Banner continued his success crushing a two-out double to left center field plating Allar.

Edgar tossed five and one third innings allowing three earned runs on six hits while rookie pitcher John D'Angelo recorded the save. Catelli picked up with loss working four innings giving up five runs on eight hits.

Three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning put the Ephs comfortably ahead 7-3 for the victory in game number two. With the win, the Ephs took the season series against the Jeffs and pushed them ahead of Amherst in the NESCAC West standings. Williams starter Ryan Fote (Wethersfield, CT) went eight innings allowing only one earned run with six strikeouts and helped out his own cause scoring two runs and knocking in another. Amherst senior starter Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) picked up the loss allowing three earned runs over five innings.

Williams jumped ahead in the third innings on back-to-back doubles by second baseman James Dicasmo (Fair Lawn, NJ) and third baseman Robert Allemand (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and a single from catcher Chris Kenney (Walpole, MA).

Down three in the sixth, Amherst again capitalized on the blunders of the Williams infield. Mazzone lead off the inning with a single through the middle. Catcher Neil Allar (Floyds Knobbs, IN) advanced on an error giving the Jeffs runners at the corners. Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) sent a sac-fly Plating Mazzone and another infield miscue allowed Allar to reach third. Banner took advantage when Williams shortstop Paul Morgan (Essex Junction, VT) bobbled a routine grounder allowing Allar to score and putting Banner on second. Lawton stepped up and delivered a two-out single that knotted the game at three.

Up by a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Ephs exploded for three more runs on RBI's from Allemand, Kenney and Morgan sealing the game for Williams.

Amherst returns to action on Wednesday afternoon at Springfield College for a 3:30 p.m. start.
