CLINTON, NY – The Amherst College baseball team clinched a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Championship Tournament with a 10-4 win over Hamilton College Friday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs (16-12, 7-3 NESCAC West) increase their winning streak to four games, and will return to action Saturday for a doubleheader with Hamilton. Game one is set to begin at noon in Clinton, NY.
Amherst got on the board early by plating two runs in the top of the first, but Hamilton came back to score twice in the fourth inning and once in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. The Jeffs regained the lead in the seventh inning by scoring three times, and added five insurance runs in the top of the ninth to pull away for a 10-4 win.
First-year Andy Thal (McLean, VA) led Amherst with four hits, while fellow rookie Will Lawton (Newton, MA) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior co-captain Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) and sophomore Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) each went 2-for-4, with Mazzone adding three RBIs and a run scored and Powers chipping in with an RBI and pair of runs.
First-years Teddy Blank (Waban, MA) and John D'Angelo (Woodbridge, CT) combined for three innings of one-hit relief, with D'Angelo striking out four batters in two innings of work to close out the game.
