From a Bentley College Release
May 6, 2007
WALTHAM, MA – First-year right-hander Teddy Blank (Waban, MA) tossed five scoreless innings and junior first baseman Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, as the Amherst College baseball team defeated Bentley College, 6-3, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field. The Jeffs improve to 19-12 (9-3 NESCAC West) and will carry a seven-game win streak into the upcoming conference tournament.
Amherst wasted no time jumping on top, with its first three batters all getting hits and scoring. Senior designated hitter Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) and Allar each had RBI singles and junior Evan Bruno (Williamsburg, VA) picked up an RBI on a sacrifice bunt.
The Jeffs added an unearned run in the third inning and made it a 5-0 game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Allar.
Bentley did all its scoring in the seventh inning. Sophomore leftfielder Kevin Vona had a two-RBI single and senior shortstop Steve Gath singled home the Falcons' third run, cutting the deficit to two, 5-3.
Amherst, which out-hit Bentley 13-7 and stranded 15 runners on base (at least one every inning), picked up an insurance run in the ninth on a walk, stolen base, ground out and the Falcons' sixth error of the afternoon.
Blank, who evened his record at 2-2, allowed only four singles and one walk in his five innings of work. First-year lefty John D'Angelo (Woodbridge, CT) picked up the save, his fourth of the season. He gave up the hits to Vona and Gath in the seventh upon first entering the game, but retired the final seven Falcons in order.
In addition to the three hits from Allar, Amherst received two apiece from senior centerfielder Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) and junior DH Nick Boehm (Shaker Heights, OH). Vona and Gath each had two hits for Bentley.
The NESCAC West tournament will begin Friday, May 11 at Williams College.
