MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College baseball team was scheduled to play its first home games of the season today, but poor field conditions moved the Lord Jeffs to Wesleyan University for a NESCAC West doubleheader. Just one day after defeating Wesleyan 6-3, Amherst got right back to work and blanked the Cardinals 4-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two to move to 7-5 (3-0 NESCAC) on the season.
The majority of Amherst's offense in game one came in the first inning, with senior co-captain Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) getting things started by driving in sophomore Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) with a single. Later in the inning, senior Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) roped a two-RBI triple that drove in Mazzone and junior Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN).
Amherst chalked up another run in the fifth inning when first-year Any Thal (McLean, VA) led off with a walk and would eventually be driven home by Allar. Junior pitcher Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) would need only one run from his offense, as he threw seven scoreless innings for the complete game victory, allowing only six hits while striking out two. With the win, Edgar moves to 1-3 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Jeffs once again piled a majority of their offense into one inning when sophomore Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) belted a one-out grand slam - his second homer of the season - to give Amherst a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Allar, Scott, Thal and first-year Will Lawton (Newton, MA) each finished with two hits in the second game.
Senior Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) threw the first six innings for Amherst, surrendering only four hits while punching out seven Cardinals. First-year Teddy Blank (Waban, MA) pitched three innings of solid relief to preserve the shutout, striking out four and giving up only two hits. Donahue moves to an even 1-1 with the win.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Wednesday for a road match-up with Eastern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
