FROM A BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY RELEASE
April 25, 2006
WALTHAM, MA – The Amherst College baseball team earned a narrow 5-4 non-conference victory at Brandeis University on Tuesday evening on the strength of sophomore Chris Edgar's (Massapequa, NY) third victory of the year and senior Rob Anderson's (Winnetka, IL) NESCAC-best fifth save of the season. The Jeffs improved to 17-9-1, while Brandeis dropped to 17-12-1.
Edgar gave up two runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out six in five innings, and Anderson surrendered a pair of runs on five hits. The top half of the Jeffs' lineup was deadly as senior Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) and junior Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) slapped three hits apiece, while fellow seniors Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) and Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) and sophomore Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) each earned a pair of hits. Allar paced the bunch with a trio of RBI, while Levinson knocked home a pair.
The Jeffs picked up three runs in the first inning. Two came on a double by Levinson, who later scored on an infield grounder by Allar. The Judges answered with a pair in the third, but Amherst regained a two-run edge in the seventh as Schonberger singled and scored on an Allar double.
Brandeis cut it back to one in the eighth, however, Banner reached on a bunt single to open the final frame and added the insurance, and eventual game-winning run on Allar's third RBI. The Judges rallied again, but fell short as Anderson slammed the door shut.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon for a non-conference doubleheader with NESCAC East rival Trinity College.
