AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team dropped its fourth decision in the past five contests on Tuesday afternoon falling to visiting non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State College (ECSU), 7-2. With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 14-8-1 on the season while the Warriors improve to 16-11.
Amherst rookie starting pitcher Ryan Platzbecker (Westlake, OH) picked up the loss (0-2), despite not giving up an earned run in three innings pitched, while rookie Ben Goldfarb (Hasting-on-Hudson, NY) gave up four earned runs in four innings of relief. First-year Daren Snyder (Dalton, MA) made his second appearance of the season, whiffing a pair in a scoreless inning, and senior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) also hurled a shutout inning.
ECSU senior starting pitcher Alex Narus (Prospect, CT) went five innings, allowing one run en route to his second victory of the year. Sophomore Troy Bongiovanni (Meridan, CT) went three innings allowing one earned run on four hits before senior Brian Wendell (S. Kingston, RI) ended the ninth with two strikeouts.
Amherst took an early 1-0 lead when senior first baseman Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) reached on a fielder's choice allowing senior outfielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) to score. ECSU responded with seven runs led by junior centerfielder Randy Re (Danbury, CT) and senior second baseman Marc Garofalo (S. Kingstown, RI), who tallied three hits apiece, while junior left fielder Eric O'Toole (Waterbury, CT) had two hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
The Jeffs tacked on a final run in the bottom of the eighth frame, but couldn't mount a full-blown comeback.
Amherst returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. visiting Middlebury College for a NESCAC West Division showdown.
