AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team took a decisive doubleheader sweep over Trinity College in a non-conference rematch of last seasons NESCAC Championship game, with a 3-1 victory in game one, followed by a 10-4 thrashing in game two. With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 19-9-1 overall while the Bantams drop to 17-14.
Amherst senior pitcher Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) threw his third complete game in as many outings, tossing a three-hitter with no earned runs and six strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. Senior shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) had two hits and a run scored while senior first baseman Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) and rookie third baseman Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) each added RBI singles for the Jeffs. Trinity starter Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, TX) went six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
The second half of the double dip featured dominating pitching from Amherst junior hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) who went six shutout innings, allowing three hits while whiffing six Bantam batters. The Amherst bats came alive early, jumping out to a seven- run lead in the first two innings. Schonberger continued his monster afternoon with three hits, four RBI and two runs scored while junior right fielder Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) smacked three hits and crossed the plate three times. Powers continued his tear with four RBI on two hits while senior center fielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) had two hits, two runs and an RBI while flashing some leather in the outfield. Trinity rookie catcher Sean Kileen (Greenfield, MA) had two hits and two RBI for the Bantams.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) at noon when they welcome non-conference foe Keene State College.
