MIDDLEBURY, VT – Senior hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) pushed his record to a flawless 5-0 on Friday afternoon with his third complete game of the season to lead the Amherst College baseball team to a 5-2 victory at NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury College . The Jeffs improved to 15-8-1 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play, while the Panthers fell to 15-6 (4-2 NESCAC West).
Middlebury jumped on top in the first inning, stringing together a pair of doubles for the 1-0 lead. Senior Ryan Armstrong padded the Panther lead in the third inning pocketing his second RBI of the day as he knocked home sophomore Gabe Broughton.
Amherst finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as junior Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) drilled a two-out double to left center to score sophomore Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN). The Jeffs took control two frames later, capitalizing a pair of Middlebury errors to put up four more runs and seal up the win. Senior Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) and sophomore Josh Card (North Adams, MA) both picked up RBIs in the run.
Vladeck scattered six hits and two walks, while striking out three in the win, while his Middlebury counterpart, sophomore Justin Wright, also went the distance, giving up just one earned run on eight hits and two walks to suffer his first loss of the season (4-1).
Mazzone finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Schonberger was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and classmate Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) was 2-for-4 as well.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. for a doubleheader at Middlebury.
