FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College baseball team posted four straight victories in Ft. Myers, Fla., taking a 10-5 decision from Bethel University, sweeping a doubleheader against Fredonia St. and blanking St. Lawrence, 3-0. With the run the Jeffs improved to 6-4 on the season. Senior Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) paced Amherst in the spurt, going 7-for-14 at the plate with a double, a triple, a homerun and a pair of RBI.
Rookie Ben Goldfarb (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) threw an excellent game against Bethel, taking over for classmate Mike Hinckley (Carlsbad, CA) in first inning and tossing 7.1 innings of two-hit ball. Goldfarb surrendered just two runs while striking out three in his first collegiate victory. Senior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) picked up his second save of the year with 1.2 innings of relief. Senior Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY), sophomore Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) and rookies Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) and Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) plated two runs apiece as Allar and Schaller posted three hits each and Schonberger and Powers had two.
Green went 3-for-4 with a triple, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Jeffs to a 5-3 win over Fredonia St. in the first game on Friday. Meanwhile, classmate Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) hurled a complete game on the hill, giving up only one earned run on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Junior Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) displayed similar pitching dominance in the nightcap, scattering nine hits and fanning eight batters en route to the 4-3 victory. Senior Dave Levinson (Chester Park, PA) pounded out a trio of singles and an RBI, while Schonberger was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and junior Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sophomore sensation Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) remained flawless on the hill in the win over St. Lawrence, pitching a complete-game shutout. He surrendered only three hits and two walks, punching out eight batters in his first win of the season. The first six batters of the Jeff lineup each posted one hit, led by doubles from Schonberger, Green and Banner.
Amherst wraps up its swing in Fort Myers, Fla., tomorrow (Sunday) at 9 a.m. against Colby College.
