FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team concluded its season-opening Florida trip at 5-2 with a 10-7 win over Colby College on Saturday, and a 6-1 victory over third-ranked St. Thomas on Sunday.
Junior hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) upped his pitching record to 3-0 with 6.1 solid innings against Colby, surrendering two unearned runs with eight strikeouts in relief of sophomore starter Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT). Sophomore Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) paced the offense with a triple, two singles and three RBIs.
The Jeffs took what seemed to be a commanding early lead with a five-run flurry in the second, but Colby answered with five runs to knot the score in the bottom of the third. After Colby took a 7-6 lead in the sixth, Banner smacked an RBI triple and scored on a Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) sac fly for an 8-7 Amherst edge in the top of the eighth. Banner then cemented the win with a two-run single in the ninth. Junior Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) bolstered the Amherst attack, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a trio of walks, while sophomore Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) went 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored.
Against St. Thomas, a prearranged seven-inning affair, rookie Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) pitched five strong innings to pick up the win. Sophomore Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) added two innings of scoreless relief. Senior co-captain Dave Powers (Andover, MA) provided the key hit when his two-run triple helped spark a five-run rally in the bottom of the third.
Amherst returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at noon at Westfield State.
