FORT MYERS, FL - Senior co-captain Dave Powers (Andover, MA) went 4-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, while junior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) plated what would prove to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Amherst College baseball team to a wild 7-6 win over St. Lawrence University in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday night.
Amherst used four pitchers in the victory, including rookie flamethrower Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY), who faced one batter in the eighth and then set St. Lawrence down in order with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth, earning his first collegiate win. Sophomore Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) drew the start and surrendered just one run with three strikeouts in five strong innings before giving way to seniors Kyle Lavery (Westbury, NY), Mike Erkkinen (Yarmouth, ME) and, eventually, Edgar.
Powers broke a 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but St. Lawrence rebounded with three runs to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Amherst then answered with a three-run rally in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a game-tying RBI triple from red-hot junior outfielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA), who now has six hits and a pair of triples in the Jeffs' first three games. Green also scored the go-ahead run in the inning.
St. Lawrence knotted the score yet again with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Edgar stepped in and blanked the Saints the rest of the way, setting the stage for Anderson's game-winning sacrifice fly, which scored Powers in the top of the ninth.
Powers' 4-for-4 showing was an excellent sign for the offense, as was Green's 2-for-5, two-RBI night. Rookie catcher Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) also excelled in his first collegiate game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.
Now 2-1 on the season, Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Clarkson University, also in Fort Myers.
