FORT MYERS, FL - Sophomore Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) blasted two home runs, including a towering three-run blast in the top of the eighth inning, but his career day went for naught as the Amherst College baseball team dropped an 11-9 shootout to No.1-ranked Rowan University in Naples, Florida on Wednesday.
Banner finished 3-for-4 and drove in four runs on the afternoon. His pair of big-flies were the first of his career. Junior shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) homered for the second time in as many days, giving him 10 career round-trippers, while rookie catcher Josh Card (North Adams, MA) left the yard with a solo shot in the second inning. Junior outfielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) continued his otherworldly offensive onslaught, pounding out three hits before exiting the game with a hamstring injury in the fifth inning. Green is now 13-for-18 on the season, good for a cool .722 batting average.
Sophomore hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) drew the start and fell to 0-1, surrendering seven hits and seven earned runs in five innings. Junior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) finished the game with three frames of scoreless relief.
Amherst trailed 10-3 after six innings but made it an 11-7 game with four runs in the eighth. Banner's three-run shot highlighted the rally, and the Jeffs went on to load the bases with no outs but couldn't capitalize. Schonberger's solo blast sparked a two-run rally in the ninth, but again, the Jeffs would fall short.
Now 3-2 with three Florida games remaining, Amherst returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. against Illinois College in Fort Myers.
