Donahue Pitches Red-Hot Jeffs Past Williams

April 29, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Sophomore hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) struck out five and surrendered just two hits and one unearned run in 7.1 innings to give the streaking Amherst College baseball team a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting NESCAC West Division rival Williams College on Friday. The win was Amherst's 10th straight, upping its record to 16-3 overall, 5-0 in divisional play and 10-0 at home. Williams fell to 15-14 (6-4 NESCAC West) with its third consecutive loss.

Donahue (4-1) gave up a hit in the first and then cruised all the way into the top of the eighth, when he finally surrendered an unearned run on an RBI double by Williams senior Guy Smith (New York, NY). Amherst junior Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) then entered the fray and set the next five Williams batters down in order, including a trio of strikeouts, to cement the win, lowering his ERA to a microscopic 1.15.

Meanwhile, senior Dave Powers (Andover, MA) put the Jeffs on the board with his fourth home run of the season, a solo blast over the left-center-field wall in the bottom of the second inning. Amherst upped the lead to 5-0 with a four-run rally in the third, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) and an RBI two-sacker by sophomore Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY), and added an insurance tally in the fourth as senior Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) smacked a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ).

Santry also capped the win with a sparkling defensive play at third base, diving behind the bag and gunning across the diamond for the final out of the game.

Williams used three pitchers in the loss. Senior Chris Bodner (Carlisle, MA) drew the start and allowed just five hits and three earned runs in six complete innings, but took the loss to fall to 3-3.

The Jeffs and Ephs will resume their three-game set with a NESCAC West Division doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. in Williamstown.
