HARWICH, MA - The Amherst College baseball team suffered a narrow 3-2 NCAA Regional loss to Wheaton College at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Massachusetts on Thursday. Sophomore hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) went the distance for the Jeffs, surrendering just four hits and one earned run as Amherst fell to 23-8-1, but returns to face NESCAC rival Trinity College tomorrow (Friday) at 3:30 p.m.
Amherst came out firing as junior center fielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) and sophomore second baseman Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) slapped back-to-back singles and senior co-captain Dave Powers (Andover, MA) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with just one out. Junior shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) grounded into a fielder's choice to score the first run, and sophomore Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) plated the second with a single to right.
Wheaton first-year Pat O'Connor pulled the Lyons within one in the bottom of the second, drawing a lead-off walk, swiping second, advancing to third on a balk and trotting home on a two-out single by sophomore Adam Laplante. The Lyons stole the lead in the following inning, plating a pair of unearned runs, and held on to their one-run advantage behind a complete-game performance from senior pitcher Matt Ponte. Ponte gave up two runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out 10. The Jeffs threatened in the top of the 9th as rookie catcher Matt Over (Barrington, IL) and Green singled and reached scoring position on a wild pitch, but Ponte got out of the jam, forcing a pop up to right field to seal the win.
O'Connor finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and fellow rookie Scott Guillerault added a double and an RBI in the win. Green paced the Jeffs at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
