MANSFIELD, CT - Senior co-captain Dave Powers (Andover, MA) doubled and scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) in the top of the first inning, but the Amherst College baseball team surrendered three runs in each of the first two frames en route to a 7-1 non-league loss at 17th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday.
The Jeffs (6-3) managed just six hits off a trio of Eastern Conn. hurlers. Schonberger and sophomore right fielder Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) paced the offense with a pair of singles each, upping their averages to .406 and .455, respectively. Powers was robbed of a multi-hit game on a diving catch by Eastern Conn. center fielder Randy Re in the top of the fifth inning.
Amherst used six pitchers, including rookie Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY), who drew the start and was pegged with the loss, falling to 2-1 after allowing just one earned run in the first. He was followed by sophomore Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA), junior Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC), senior Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ), sophomore Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) and junior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL). Imperatore, Kehoe and Anderson each pitched scoreless innings.
Eastern Conn. improved to 12-6 with the win.
Amherst returns to action with a three-game set against visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College, beginning with a single game Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
