FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team played hot and cold on Friday - the last day of its spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida - falling to Messiah College 5-3 and crushing Roger Williams University 24-5. The Jeffs cranked out 18 hits in the win over Roger Williams, while rookie hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) picked up his first collegiate victory. Saturday's game against St. Lawrence University was rained out and will not be rescheduled. Amherst returns to New England with a 5-3 record.
The Jeffs mustered just six hits in the loss to Messiah. Junior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and senior Brett Nicol (Orinda, CA) each drove in a run. First-year Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) pitched five innings but took the loss to fall to 0-2.
Junior Tom Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) and senior co-captain Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) drove in a combined eight runs against Roger Williams. Rookie Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair. Classmate Andy Green (Lexington, MA) followed suit with two hits and four runs scored. Junior infielder Brandon Cody (Boston, MA) finished with two hits. Vladeck improved to 1-0 with the win.
Amherst was scheduled to play the University of St. Thomas on Sunday but the game was cancelled. The Jeffs return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Westfield State, weather permitting.
