March 17, 2003

FORT MYERS, FL - Seeing its first action without a roof over its head, the Amherst College baseball team opened its season in Fort Myers, Florida with a pair of respective 13-1 wins over Division II rival Bluefield State College and Division III foe SUNY Fredonia on Saturday and Sunday.

The Jeffs pounded out 14 hits in Saturday's seven-inning win over Bluefield State. Sophomore shortstop Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) went 3-for-3, while junior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) added a pair of RBI's and made a sparkling defensive play in center field. Senior right-hander Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) pitched four innings and picked up the win, and combined with relievers Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA), Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) and Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ) to surrender just five Bluefield State hits.

The game against Bluefield St. was a last minute replacement for an originally scheduled matchup with Johns Hopkins University. The game against Johns Hopkins will not be rescheduled.

Amherst followed that with a 19-hit outburst against SUNY Fredonia. Whiting and senior co-captain Dan Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) finished with three hits each. Matt Potter (Durham, NC), Rob Anderson (Winetka, IL), David Powers (Andover, MA) and Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) added two hits apiece. Junior starter Andy Kerns (Barrington, IL) earned the win, surrendering just five hits and an unearned run in five innings. Rookie Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC), senior southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) and Anderson and each saw action out of the bullpen.

Amherst returns to the diamond Monday at 7 p.m. against Fontbonne College, also in Fort Myers.
