Jeffs Take Season Series Over Wesleyan with Dramatic 7-6 Win

April 2, 2003

MIDDLETOWN, CT - After splitting a NESCAC West Division doubleheader on Saturday, the Amherst baseball team took the season series from Little Three rival Wesleyan University with a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind win on Wednesday. The Jeffs, ranked seventh in New England, trailed 6-2 early on but rebounded with a five-run seventh inning to seal the win.

Amherst sent nine players to the plate in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a game-winning RBI single by sophomore left fielder David Powers (Andover, MA), after junior third baseman Matt Potter (Durham, NC) knotted the score with a two-run single on the previous at-bat. Senior co-captain John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) singled home a run earlier in the inning, after junior second baseman Fran Morales (North Andover, MA) plated classmate Tom Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) on a fielder's choice.

Junior starter Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) pitched 5.1 strong innings for the Jeffs, but exited the game with a man on after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY), who closed Saturday's Game 2 win over Wesleyan, came on and pitched 3.2 innings of hitless relief, striking out six batters in route to his first win of the season. His ERA remains 0.00 in 9.1 innings on the year.

Red-hot sophomore shortstop Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) doubled, scored a run and had his second straight three-hit game for Amherst. Sullivan added three hits and scored twice.

The win provided sweet revenge for Amherst after Wesleyan swept all three games against the Jeffs last season.

Amherst (8-4/2-1 NESCAC) returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. for the first of a three-game set against visiting West Division foe Middlebury College. Amherst and Middlebury will also play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon.
