WESTFIELD, MA - The Amherst baseball team pounded out 13 hits and used five pitchers in a 9-4 win at non-league foe Westfield State College on Thursday. Senior co-captain John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) belted his third homer of the season as the Jeffs improved to 6-3.
Amherst scored three runs in the opening frame on RBI singles by senior DH Brett Nicol (Orinda, CA) and junior center fielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA). Sophomore left fielder Dave Powers (Andover, MA) also scored on a perfectly executed first-and-third double steal.
The Jeffs added four more in the sixth behind Schneider's two-run blast and a two-run single by Powers. Meanwhile, junior starter Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA), who improved to 2-1 with the win, cruised through the first three innings, scattering just two hits and striking out five before giving way to senior Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) in the fourth. Ansell threw one scoreless inning and was relieved by rookie Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC), who tossed two frames and surrendered three runs in the sixth. Sophomore Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ) faced five batters and gave up a run in the seventh. First-year Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) then pitched the last 2.2 innings and finished the game unscathed despite loading the bases in the ninth and allowing four walks.
Schneider, Powers, Whiting and junior second baseman Fran Morales (N. Andover, MA) each finished with two hits for the Jeffs. Westfield St. fell to 6-4 with the loss.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon for a NESCAC West Division doubleheader against visiting Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
