MANSFIELD, CT - The Amherst baseball team managed just three hits in a 14-0 loss at fifth-ranked defending national champion Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday. Eastern Conn., which also blanked Albertus Magnus 2-0 earlier in the day, stretched its overall record to 17-4 and extended its current winning streak to nine games, while avenging last season's 5-2 loss at Amherst.
Singles by sophomore second baseman Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ), rookie first baseman Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) and senior right fielder John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) were the lone offensive highlights for the Jeffs. Amherst used five pitchers, including senior starter Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL), who pitched five innings but took the loss to fall to 2-2. Rookies Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) and Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL), sophomore Joe Houkal (Boulder, CO) and first-year Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) each saw action in relief.
Eastern Connecticut racked up 16 hits, while rookie southpaw Ryan DiPietro (Berlin, CT) retired 13 straight at one point and held the Jeffs to just one hit through seven innings, upping his record to 4-1. Jeff Funaro (Milford, CT) drove in five runs with a two-run blast in the fourth inning and a three-run jack in the seventh.
Amherst returns to action with a doubleheader Saturday at noon against visiting Brandeis University, weather permitting.
