SPRINGFIELD, MA - Sophomore left fielder David Powers (Andover, MA) went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning, as the Amherst College baseball team won its regular-season finale, 6-4, at Springfield College on Tuesday. Powers' single snapped a 4-4 tie in the final frame, upping the NESCAC West Division Champion Jeffs' overall record to 19-10 entering the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, which Amherst will host this Friday through Sunday.
Sophomore third baseman Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) added three hits for Amherst, including an RBI single that brought home an insurance run in the ninth. Junior center fielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) finished 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
Amherst used four pitchers, with Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL), Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) and Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ) taking the mound in relief of starter Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL), who surrendered just two hits and one earned run in three full innings. Imperatore (1-1) worked out of jams in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first win of the season.
Amherst opens NESCAC Tournament play Friday at 3 p.m. against visiting Tufts University. The double elimination tournament will take place at Amherst College Memorial Field and American International College in nearby Springfield, MA.
