Jeffs Improve to 3-0 With 14-5 Rout of Hampden-Sydney

March 20, 2001

Fort Myers, Fla. - The Amherst College baseball team scored eight runs in the second inning on its way to a 14-5 rout of Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday evening. The decisive inning saw 14 Lord Jeff batters go the plate, including senior shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA), who blasted a two-run homer to right center to start the onslaught.

Amherst took advantage of Hampden-Sydney pitching to the tune of 13 hits, including three round-trippers. In addition to Krall's shot, senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) hit an opposite field solo blast--his second of the season--while junior second baseman Kevin Grant (Mendon, MA) used his first at-bat of the season to notch his first career home run. Additionally, first-years Fran Morales (North Andover, MA), Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and Andy Greig (Summit, NJ) all recorded their first career hits.

Fellow first-year Andy Kerns (Barrington, IL) earned the win on the mound after throwing three scoreless innings, while rookie Shane Neufield (Brooklyn, NY), junior Jeff Leduc (Pittsfield, MA) and sophomore Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) all saw action out of the bullpen. All five of Hampden-Sydney's runs were unearned, with four of them coming in the final inning.

With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 3-0 on their annual spring trip to Florida. They will play St. Thomas College, the two-time defending Division III national runner-up, on Wednesday, also in Fort Myers.
