WESTFIELD, MA - The Amherst College baseball team pounded out a season-high 25 hits in a lopsided 25-9 win at non-league foe Westfield State College on Thursday, improving to 10-8 on the season. It was the Jeffs' largest offensive output of the year by far, bettering their previous season-high of 14 runs in a 14-5 win over Hampden-Sydney College on March 20 in Fort Myers, Florida.
After scoring three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead, Amherst added nine runs in the sixth-all with no outs-to ignite the blowout. The Jeffs then scored three runs in each of the seventh and eight innings and four in the ninth to set the final score.
Sophomore outfielder Jarrett Solomon (Simsbury, CT) went four-for-five with four runs scored for Amherst, while senior outfielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) added four hits, including a pair of doubles and five RBIs. First-year phenom Fran Morales (North Andover, MA) also drove in five runs with a double and two singles.
Sophomore southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) took the win in relief of Amherst starter Dave Krauser (Short Hills, NJ) to run his record to 2-0. Sophomore reliever Jake Kahn (St. Louis, MO) also came in and pitched the ninth for the Jeffs. Meanwhile, Westfield State sent six pitchers to the mound, including starter Dan Wenzel, who took the loss to fall to 0-1.
Amherst returns to action for a NESCAC West Division doubleheader against visiting Wesleyan University starting at 1 p.m.
