FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team knocked off Elmhurst College, 11-6, on Saturday morning, then fell in extra innings in an afternoon game against the University of Chicago, 5-2.
Against Elmhurst, sophomore southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) earned the win after throwing 4 2/3 innings. Senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) did some damage at the plate with three hits, while first baseman Brett Nicol (Orinda, CA) hit his first career home run.
In the nightcap against Chicago, Amherst fell behind 2-0 in the second inning before rallying in the fifth inning with an RBI single by Nicol, and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher J.R. Drabick (Lebanon, NH).
The Jeffs had the winning run at second base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat. In the eighth inning, Chicago scored three runs and Amherst couldn't answer. Despite being tagged with the loss, junior righthander Dave Krauser (Short Hills, NJ) posted a solid outing in 7 2/3 innings of work, the longest stint by a Lord Jeff this season.
Amherst is now 6-3 on their annual spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla., and will conclude the trip on Sunday morning with a single game against Upper Iowa.
