FORT MYERS, FL - Junior right-hander Jeff Leduc (Pittsfield, MA) surrendered just five hits and struck out seven in pitching the Amherst College baseball team to a 7-1 victory in the nightcap of a double-header against Calvin College on Thursday. Amherst dropped the opener 4-2.
In game one, first-year Amherst starter Andy Kerns (Barrington, IL) allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. A bad hop ground ball hit with two outs in the second inning opened the door for three Calvin runs, and the silent Amherst bats couldn't recover. The Jeffs managed two runs in the seventh thanks to a Devon Haran (Basking Ridge, NJ) single and a pair of doubles by senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) and junior second baseman John Brody (Baltimore, MD).
Playing the nightcap at the Boston Red Sox minor league complex, Amherst jumped on top early with three runs in the first inning. Whitmarsh doubled and singled to continue his hot hitting, while senior shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA) added a two-run triple and senior outfielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) went two for three. Meanwhile, Leduc shut down Calvin, allowing just one run on a first inning triple, recording the first complete game of the season for the Jeffs.
Amherst improved to 4-2 on the season and will play Frostburg (Md.) State on Friday, and a doubleheader on Saturday against Rowan and the University of Chicago.
