April 8, 2001

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Amherst College baseball team split a doubleheader with NESCAC rival Hamilton College at Siena College in Loudonville, NY on Saturday, winning the opener 4-1 and dropping the nightcap 4-2. Junior right-hander Jeff Leduc tossed a complete-game victory in game one, as the Jeffs' record moved to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the split. The third game of the scheduled three-game set was rained out on Sunday, and no makeup date has been announced.

The Jeffs pounded out 11 hits in the opener, as senior outfielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) led the way with a pair of doubles and sophomore first baseman Brett Nicol (Orinda, CA), senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) and sophomore catcher Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) each drove in a run. Meanwhile, Leduc notched his second complete game win of the season to improve to 2-0. Steve Guillette (Northfield, MA) went the distance and took the loss for Hamilton, as all four Amherst runs were earned.

Amherst took a 2-2 tie into the sixth inning in game two, before Hamilton first-year catcher Jack Halas (Chelsea, MA) busted the game open with an RBI triple-one of three RBIs on the afternoon. Hamilton's Adam Lewkowicz (Cottekill, NY) also drove in a run as the Continental improved to 3-9 on the season.

Siegle continued his hot hitting with another two doubles, while Nicol and sophomore outfielder John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) plated the two Amherst runs. Jamie Harrison (Hingham, MA) went the distance for Hamilton, scattering nine hits and two earned runs over nine innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

First-year right-hander Andy Kerns (Barrintgton, IL) drew the game-two start for Amherst before giving way to fellow rookie Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) in the fifth inning. Webb took the loss to fall to 2-1.

The Jeffs return to action on Wednesday for a single game at non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m.
