FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team concluded its annual spring trip to Florida with a 6-4 record after losing to Upper Iowa on Sunday morning, 9-5.
The Jeffs made a valiant comeback effort against Upper Iowa, but an early 6-0 deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Amherst was able to cut the lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning, then scored two more in the sixth. But in the seventh, Upper Iowa added three more runs, completing the day with 16 hits.
Sophomore first baseman Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) and junior catcher J.R. Drabick (Lebanon, NH) led the Jeffs with two hits each, while Amherst finished with 15 hits on the day.
Jeffs' starter Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) threw 5 2/3 innings, while junior Jeff Leduc (Pittsfield, MA), who pitched a complete game win three days earlier, finished off the game.
Amherst returned north Sunday evening and weather permitting, will visit Westfield St. on Thursday, then host three league games against Middlebury over the weekend.
