Jeffs Pound Out 15 Hits in 5-2 Win Over Macalester

March 23, 2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Amherst College staved off a resilient Macalester College baseball team on Friday, winning 9-8 to improve its record to 5-2. The Jeffs banged out a season-high 15 hits, highlighted by the second home run of the season by senior shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA), and a three-hit performance by senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA).

First-year hurler Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) recorded his second victory of the young season, both in relief, after throwing 1 2/3 innings. Sophomore right-hander Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) was the starter, and threw four 2/3 innings, before being relieved by fellow sophomore Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) and then Webb.

Other offensive highlights include two hits apiece from sophomore first baseman Brett Nicol (Orinda, CA) and senior outfielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME).

The Jeffs were originally slated to play Frostburg (Md.) State on Friday, before a late cancellation brought on a last-minute schedule change. On Saturday, Amherst will play the University of Chicago at the Boston Red Sox minor league complex, as well as another late addition to its schedule, Elmhurst College. The Jeffs' spring trip in Fort Myers will conclude on Sunday with a single game against Upper Iowa.
